The Northeast First Aid Corps., Inc. began in July, 1947 as a
river rescue operation called the Torresdale Rescue Squad. It was founded by
Mr. and Mrs. William Moyer and was headquartered in their home on Arendel
Avenue. It was and still is nonprofit.
The organization gradually expanded its area of operation
away from the Delaware River to include the community as a whole. It was at
this point that ambulance service was added. The organization also moved to
an old house at 4411 Rhawn Street where headquarters were set up.
In 1960 the name of the unit was changed from Torresdale
Rescue Squad to the present name of Northeast First Aid Corps. This change
was made to reflect the broader spectrum of operations that the corps. Had
come to adopt. At this point, it was providing not just rescue and emergency
transportation of injured persons but was also providing on the scene
emergency treatment.
In 1969, the old headquarters building at 4411 Rhawn
Street was demolished and a new modern office-type building was erected in
its place. This building and a five-bay garage comprise the corp’s current
headquarters. |
